Chapter 26

The crossbow sagged in Lauren’s grip as she stared at Asterius. “The other females? What did they look like?”

He wouldn’t meet her eyes, lifting the sign with its disgusting burden to carry it to the edge of the platform. “They were described like you. I did not see them.”

“Hibbett’s daughters!” Lauren said, excitement zipping through her. “It has to be them! I need to talk to them! Maybe they know how to get back home!”

Though if they did, would they still be here in this world?

She wouldn’t let that discouraging thought dampen her excitement. Surely, they had all the answers.

Then it occurred to her what he’d just told her. “The gray has them. What has he done with them?” Maybe she needed to mount a rescue. She could find the other women, free them from the gray alien, then they could all figure out how to get back home.

Her gaze flicked to Asterius, who had flung the sign out to the scavengers and was now heading back towards her, his powerful thigh muscles flexing beneath his stained pants with each step that left hoof prints in the dirt.

He had no place on Earth. He would be captured and experimented on by the government if he was even seen in her world. Yet, for some reason, it bothered her that he would have to be left behind when she returned home.

“Gray and a pale warrior have taken one as a wife,” he said, answering a question she hadn’t been certain he’d even heard. “The other is with the Clawed One and the Fire Lizard.”

She blinked as she tried to process his words, wondering if he’d finally failed in his thus far flawless translations into her language. “Taken them as what now? Did you say ‘wife’?”

He watched her with an intent gaze, stopping several steps away from her. “Yes.”

She held up one hand. “Wait a second. You mean, like a real wife? Like a lover and partner?”

“Lover.” His voice had dropped in timber until it rumbled like thunder from his chest. His gaze never left her.

Her mind boggled, for some reason struggling more with this concept than she had with the appearance of literal monsters in a parallel universe after a lifetime of striving to live in a rational world devoid of magic or myth.

“They’re married to the gray alien and—wait, ewww.” She shook her head at the thought of some spindly gray alien mating with a human. “Oh no! Tell me he didn’t rape her! We need to rescue these poor women!”

Asterius snarled, though he shook his head. “Gray has no honor, but would not rape.”

Lauren wanted to believe that, but found it pretty difficult to imagine a woman voluntarily having sex with a gray alien. If that was even how things worked for them. Perhaps the gray didn’t actually mate with her physically. Maybe it was a mental thing. It was still rape if it was without consent, as far as Lauren was concerned.

“We need to talk to these women, Asterius.
